AUDIO / VINYL RESTORATION
Vinyl Restoration is the process of restoring
33, 45, and 78 RPM records as close to their original sound
as possible by converting them to High Quality CD. This
process ensures the life of your records and allows for
more portability by allowing you to listen to your favorite
records in your CD player. Vinyl Restoration is
done through a number of processes.
First, the source material is physically cleaned using
a special formulated solution removing dirt, dust, oils
and debris.
Next, the source is digitized to a wave file using the
highest quality needles and cartridges, and, the top of
the line Pro Audio direct drive turntables. This ensures
the correct contact with the record while providing maximum
control to deliver the most accurate sound possible.
The following stage the digitized wave file is scanned
manually and any large clicks and pops are removed by hand.
Then the file is processed using special algorithms to
remove unwanted hiss, hum, clicks and pops.
For extreme cases where the surface of the medium is scratched
and/or damaged further digital processing is performed
by hand by specially trained technicians.
*One note: Endoplasmic uses audio from
the source as much as possible when restoring items back
to the original. If there is too much damage to the actual
audio, no amount of processing will ever deliver a perfect
recording.
Also NO PHYSICAL ALTERCATION/RESTORATION to the original is
made. A digital copy is made and that copy is then altered to the best of our
ability.
The following samples are examples of restoration projects
that we have done for our clients:
*All files are in MP3 form for easier download.
I'm very satisfied with
your effort in "re-making" our '78. I knew
it was difficult, and the... record was of poor quality.
You did great in the challenge we gave you.

Wilf Carter
The first example is taken from a 78rpm single record of Wilf
Carter made from Bakelite* ,
an early form of today's plastic. This record was traced back to the beginnings
of Carters carrier sometime around 1933 and earlier.
This 78 was old and had been played many times. This resulted in a "worn
and weathered" sound. The restored version cleaned up the clicks and pops
and brought out the presence of the vocal some more.

Chet Atkins
Christmas
with Chet Atkins released in 1961, was a badly damaged record
that Endoplasmic was asked to repair. It appeared that the recorded
had been played so much that either the stylist/needle/cartridge
had worn deep, visible grooves into the surface of the record,
producing harsh "white-noise" like artifacts in the
audio. In one case, one of the tracks was replaced entirely (due
to too much damage to the original source) with a recording obtained
through alternate sources. In other cases, where copies of the
remaining tracks were not found from other sources the audio
was processed.

This next track was damaged to such an extent that no amount of processing
would deliver a decent copy. Fortunately a copy of this track was found using
alternate sources.
